So I have to confess when Lyndsey began making her own, natural skin care products, I was not the first person in line to try them. Despite my reputation of being a huge product junkie, I’m very particular about the skin care products I use, especially due to my oily, problematic skin. I was the type that didn’t hesitate to spend the big bucks on facials and expensive skin care products if they produced results! Honestly, I questioned whether all-natural products with ingredients like raw, organic honey and natural oils could be as effective as the expensive, medical grade treatments I had grown accustomed to. Plus, it made my skin crawl to hear most of Lyndsey’s products were oil based. Wait, you want me to put oil on my already oily face??? I think this is a very common concern for most, since we’ve grown up hearing oil clogs pores, ups shine, and triggers breakouts!
I don’t know if it was Lyndsey’s persistency or her husband’s comment about the After Glow scrub, “burning your face off”, that intrigued me enough to give them a try…But no lie, after just one use of the After Glow, I was sold! This prompted my new found interest in all-natural skin care, and I began researching the benefits of using oil-based products. What I quickly discovered is contrary to popular belief. Natural oil-based cleansers, scrubs, masks, and moisturizers can work wonders on oily, acne-prone skin as well as all other skin types. Did you know that it can actually decrease your skin’s oil production? I realize that sounds crazy, but one thing to note is that over-cleansing or using harsh soaps actually stimulates our sebum glands, which prompts more oil production. So basically all those years of using cleansers that contain no oil and claim to reduce shine, clear breakouts, and prevent new ones, actually worsened the situation. I can say they were effective at drying out pimples, but along the way also stripped my skin of its natural oils, causing it to overproduce to compensate for the loss. Who would have ever thought?
To further debunk this common myth, I provided 3 amazing benefits of one of my favorites, Jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is extracted from seeds of the jojoba plant that grows in the southwest deserts and contains almost all the essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for healthy skin and hair.
(1) Heal
Jojoba oil contains several key ingredients such as vitamin E, vitamin B, silicon, copper, iodine, and zinc that give jojoba oil its power to soothe and heal skin. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it’s often used for healing wounds, acne, cold sores and many other skin conditions such as eczema.
(2) Hydrate
Jojoba oil closely resembles human sebum – the oil that is naturally produced by our oil glands below the surface of the skin. For this reason, it quickly gets absorbed into the skin to hydrate without leaving behind an oil residue. It helps to create a barrier against common moisture loss, and it effectively works to soften dry skin.
(3) Treat
In addition to soothing and hydrating your skin, jojoba oil is also effective at reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, restoring balance to oily skin, and treating acne. Because of its liquid form, it can penetrate deep into the skin to effectively treat these skin conditions. The antioxidants and vitamins in jojoba oil help to bring balance and naturally slow down the signs of aging.
